It is estimated (conservatively) that each year over 300,000,000 disposable nappies are dumped into our landfill, these nappies can take between 75 - 500 years to decompose because of the many layers of plastic around the nappy. Not to mention the human effluent which is now in our landfills.
There are approx 60,000 babies born in New Zealand each year, if each baby used 5000 disposable nappies in its lifetime (6 nappies per day for 2.5years), that's over 300 million disposable nappies in our landfill.
